Florida A&M Completes Series Sweep Over Jackson State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida A&M defeated Jackson State 11-6 to complete the series sweep on Sunday.
Freshman Ryan Young (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Florida A&M (17-13, 11-1 SWAC ). The right-hander went 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Sophomore Carson Kelly also made an impact on the mound for the Rattlers, throwing three scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
Poppell went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run and two walks in addition to his four RBIs for the Rattlers. Junior William Brown put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Junior Justen Crews also contributed for Florida A&M, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Florida A&M scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run triple from Poppell.
The Rattlers lost the lead they built in the third, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 5-3. Florida A&M scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Crews, which brought the Rattlers lead to 6-5.
Florida A&M kept Jackson State without a run before building their lead to 8-5 the following inning. The Rattlers added two to their tally on Poppell's two-run homer to center.
The Tigers gained ground, closing the gap to 8-6 until Florida A&M added some insurance in the seventh. The inning resulted in three runs for the Rattlers, all of them scoring on a three-run homer from Brown to left, bringing the Florida A&M advantage to 11-6. The score remained 11-6 for the rest of the game, as the Rattlers coasted to the win.
