FAMU Law Alumnus Steven Miller Appointed Judge in Florida’s Ninth Judicial Circuit
The Florida A&M University College of Law proudly celebrates the appointment of Steven Miller, a 2013 graduate and proud Ocoee native, to the bench in Florida’s Ninth Judicial Circuit Court. Miller was appointed to serve on the Ninth Judicial Circuit court on June 2, 2025.
Miller’s journey into law began with a foundation in finance, earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Central Florida in 2009. But it was his growing awareness that “law is the game of life” that inspired him to pivot careers. “Law regulates everything,” he said, recognizing that combining legal and financial knowledge would provide the greatest opportunities to serve and succeed.
While at FAMU Law, Miller made the most of every opportunity, especially through the school’s Prosecution Clinic with the Ninth Circuit State Attorney’s Office. That hands-on experience led to his first role as an Assistant State Attorney. He went on to serve seven years in Orange County and then four years in Lake County, building a respected legal career rooted in fairness and service.
Now appointed to the bench, Miller’s mission remains simple: “Be a good person and do right.” He encourages FAMU Law students to take full advantage of practical experiences like clinics and trial teams while in school, as those moments can shape future careers.
Outside the courtroom, Miller finds balance through family time, helping others, and a hands-on hobby working on cars and pulling parts from junkyards. He also aspires to return to the classroom one day to teach trial practice and criminal procedure, continuing his commitment to mentorship and growth.
“Judge Steven Miller exemplifies the mission and spirit of FAMU Law,” said Dean Cecil Howard, associate provost and interim dean of the FAMU College of Law. “His journey from Ocoee to the bench proves that with determination, preparation, and heart, our graduates can and will change the face of justice.”
From Ocoee to the courtroom, Miller’s story is a testament to purpose, perseverance, and the power of opportunity, core values at the heart of FAMU Law.
