Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida A&M University (FAMU) Professor John Luque, Ph.D., MPH, has been named a Fulbright U.S. Scholar 2025-26 for Ecuador. He will spend the fall semester on sabbatical in Quito, Ecuador to conduct research on colorectal cancer screening education at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ).
“The Florida A&M University community extends our enthusiastic congratulations to Dr. John Luque on his appointment as a distinguished Fulbright U.S. Scholar,” said FAMU Interim President Timothy L. Beard, Ph.D. “His research monitoring colorectal cancer screening adherence in community health centers will have a meaningful impact as he extends his work abroad. We salute his dedication to building relationships and sharing his expertise to address critical global challenges.”
Luque is a tenured full professor in public health sciences in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health at Florida A&M University. His research interests are focused on developing and testing community-based cancer education interventions in medically underserved populations. He has also conducted research on knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs around cancer screening and prevention with Hispanic/Latino and African American populations and conducted systematic reviews on the effectiveness of community health worker interventions. This research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“I am very excited to be selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to Ecuador during academic year 2025-26,” said Luque. “I have not been back to Ecuador in over 20 years since completing my doctoral dissertation research there, so I am very excited for the opportunity to collaborate with public health faculty and students from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito.”
The Fulbright Scholarship is the U.S. government’s signature international educational exchange program, which was established to foster lasting relationships between people of the United States and the international community. Fulbright recipients are selected based on academic and professional achievement, in addition to their record for service and leadership potential in their respective fields.

Fulbright benefits extend beyond the individual recipient by raising the profile of their home institutions. The engagement abroad will help FAMU to establish research and exchange relationships, connect with potential applicants, and engage with FAMU alumni in the host country.
