Launched in Fall 2024, the Writing Center at Florida A&M University College of Law has quickly emerged as a vital academic support hub for students navigating the rigors of legal education. In less than a year, the center has welcomed nearly 400 students, signaling a strong demand for its services and solidifying its role as a cornerstone of academic success.
More than 61% of students visiting the center sought direct assistance with legal writing assignments—ranging from case briefs and memos to appellate briefs—while the remaining 39% used the space for quiet study and access to academic resources. This balance highlights the Writing Center’s unique dual function as both a learning lab and a sanctuary for focused preparation.
During the final academic week of Spring 2025, students were given an opportunity to offer feedback on their experience. While response numbers were modest, the quality of feedback spoke volumes. One student shared, “Great resource to receive in-depth feedback on writing skills that apply outside of the legal writing standard. Very knowledgeable and helpful in correcting grammatical mistakes and providing adequate examples to improve tone in different writing assignments.” Another praised Writing Fellow Hunter Maples for his professionalism and support: “He was so nice and helpful.”
Looking ahead, the Writing Center is expanding its vision to match the evolving needs of today’s law students. Writing Center Director Mule shared, “As we continue to accommodate the incoming cohort and the increased demand for resources aligned with the NextGen Bar Exam, our focus remains on meeting students where they are—academically and technically. Strengthening fundamental writing skills early not only supports their legal writing success but also sharpens their overall communication for long-term professional impact.”
Building on this foundation, the Writing Center will launch a new initiative in Fall 2025—Writing Week. This multi-day event will offer students a deeper dive into writing and research fundamentals through a series of themed workshops, one-on-one consultations, and collaborative activities. Students will also meet with support staff from various departments, fostering a more connected academic environment.
As the FAMU College of Law continues to champion student success, the Writing Center stands as a testament to the power of clear communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement—equipping the next generation of legal minds to write, argue, and lead with confidence.
