FAMU Clarifies: No Suspensions Related to Recent Petition or Prayer Vigil

Florida A&M University remains committed to the principles of free speech and the open exchange of ideas. As an academic institution, we support the right of our students, faculty, and community to express their views in a manner that is respectful and constructive. This commitment reflects the core values of higher education and our dedication to fostering a thoughtful, engaged campus environment.

While we cannot comment on matters related to specific students, no students were suspended as a result of the FAMU petition or last week's prayer vigil on campus, which was held in adherence to FAMU regulation 5.005.

As with other universities and colleges in the nation, students who violate institutions’ codes of conduct are investigated to assess if their behaviors violate and or warrant student discipline. A hearing panel, which includes university students, assesses alleged violations and determines if a violation occurred. If it is determined that a violation occurred, the hearing panel determines the appropriate student discipline. Students who are found responsible for Code of Conduct violations have the opportunity to appeal decisions to a designated appellate officer.

FAMU believes in upholding due process and protecting the rights of all members of our campus community.

William Hudson Jr., Ph.D.
