Florida A&M Run Rules Grambling State in SWAC Tourney
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --Florida A&M got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Rattlers put 14 runs on the board and defeat the Grambling Tigers 14-4 Thursday.
Sophomore Carson Kelly (6-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Florida A&M (32-23). The left-hander went 3.2 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Senior Jesus Campa started the ballgame and went 4.1 innings, surrendering one run on seven hits, walking one and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Florida A&M plated two runs when freshman Jay Campbell left the yard with junior William Brown aboard.
The Tigers then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 2-1 until the Rattlers expanded their advantage in the fifth. The Florida A&M offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of senior Colton Ryals, which brought the score to 6-1 in favor of the Rattlers.
Grambling narrowed Florida A&M's lead to 6-2 before the Rattlers stretched the advantage to 11-2 in the seventh inning. The Rattlers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a one-run single off the bat of junior Jordan Brown.
The Tigers gained ground, closing the gap to 11-4 until Florida A&M added some insurance in the eighth. The three-run frame for the Rattlers was puncuated by a two-run homer from Ryals. bringing the Florida A&M advantage to 14-4. The score remained 14-4 for the rest of the game, as the Rattlers coasted to the win.
