All Florida A&M starters reach base in 7-3 victory against Jackson State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --Florida A&M received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Rattlers put seven runs on the board and take down the Jackson State Tigers 7-3 Friday.
Senior Cody Williams (2-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Florida A&M (15-13, ). The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing three walks and striking out four. Sophomore Carson Kelly also pitched well, going three innings, surrendering one run on three hits, walking two and striking out two.
At the plate, the Rattlers were paced by freshman Broedy Poppell, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Junior Ben Kim put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Junior Ethan Miller also helped out for Florida A&M, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Florida A&M got an RBI single from sophomore Josue Figueroa, scoring junior William Brown from third base.
The Tigers broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the fourth inning, when the Rattlers got back on the scoreboard. Florida A&M plated two runs off of Jackson State pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Miller, which brought the Rattlers lead to 3-2.
Florida A&M held Jackson State scoreless before building their lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning.
The Tigers gained ground, closing the gap to 6-3 until Florida A&M added some insurance in the eighth. The Rattlers sent in a run on Poppell's one-out solo home run off senior C. Lewis, bringing the Florida A&M advantage to 7-3. The score remained 7-3 for the rest of the game, as the Rattlers coasted to the win.
