Crews and Poppell shine in Florida A&M's 10-1 victory over Texas Southern
HOUSTON, Texas --Junior Justen Crews and Broedy Poppell each racked up three hits to help propel the Florida A&M Rattlers over the Texas Southern Tigers 10-1 on Friday.
Freshman Garrett Workman (7-4) started on the mound and picked up the win for Florida A&M (25-23, 19-6). The left-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out four.
In addition to his three hits, Poppell had a double and an RBI to lead the Rattlers. Crews added a home run, a walk and two RBIs to his three-hit performance as well. Freshman Jay Campbell also contributed for Florida A&M, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding two doubles, a walk and three RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rattlers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Florida A&M plated two runs when senior Jalen Niles left the yard with senior Colton Ryals aboard.
The Rattlers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the sixth inning after the Tigers cut it to 2-1. Campbell came across to score the lone run of the inning for Florida A&M, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Rattlers.
Florida A&M kept Texas Southern scoreless before building their lead to 10-1 in the ninth inning. The Rattlers bats heated up in the inning, scoring seven runs, including a three-run double off the bat of Campbell and a two-run home run from Crews. The score remained 10-1 for the rest of the game, as Florida A&M coasted to the win.
