FAMU Defeats Grambling to Claim Series Win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --Freshman Matthew Perez racked up four RBI to help lead the Florida A&M Rattlers past the Grambling Tigers 11-9 on Sunday.

Freshman Jay Campbell (1-0) got the win for Florida A&M (21-20, ). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing three walks and striking out one.

Perez went 2-for-2 with a home run and three walks in addition to his four RBI for the Rattlers. Junior William Brown furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Colton Ryals also contributed for Florida A&M, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rattlers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Rattlers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the second inning after the Tigers cut it to 3-2. Florida A&M picked up a run on Brown's leadoff home run off of junior Trenton Shaw, which brought the Rattlers lead to 4-2.

Florida A&M kept Grambling scoreless before building their lead to 8-2 in the fifth inning. The Rattlers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Ryals.

The Tigers gained ground, closing the gap to 8-5 until Florida A&M added some insurance in the seventh. The inning resulted in three runs for the Rattlers, all of them scoring on a three-run homer off the bat of Perez to right, bringing the score to 11-5 in favor of Florida A&M. Grambling put four runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Rattlers still held on for the 11-9 win.
