Florida A&M Falls to Grambling in Series Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --Freshman Garrett Workman was dominant on Friday, punching out nine Grambling hitters over six innings of work, but it was not enough as the Florida A&M Rattlers fell to the Tigers 6-4.

In addition to his nine strikeouts, Workman (5-4) tossed six innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits and walking two for Florida A&M (19-20, ). Senior Cody Williams also made an impact on the mound for the Rattlers, throwing three innings, giving up one run on one hit, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Rattlers were led by freshman Broedy Poppell, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run, two walks and two RBI. Junior Ethan Miller put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Freshman Jay Campbell also chipped in for Florida A&M, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 5-0, the Rattlers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Florida A&M plated two runs when Poppell left the yard with senior Jalen Niles aboard.

The Rattlers kept the Tigers off the board before narrowing the gap further in the fourth. Florida A&M scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Matthew Perez, which tightened the Tigers lead to 5-3.
