Avery D. McKnight Appointed General Counsel at Florida A&M University

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Florida A&M University (FAMU) announces the appointment of Avery D. McKnight as vice president of Legal Affairs and general counsel, effective May 12, 2025. The alumnus brings with him more than three decades of legal experience, much of it dedicated to the service of higher education and public institutions across the state of Florida.

“Avery McKnight is no stranger to Florida A&M University, having served four permanent presidents and three interim presidents over 25 years,” says FAMU Interim President Timothy L. Beard, Ph.D. “His deep knowledge of higher education law, his history with our institution, and his proven leadership in navigating complex legal issues make him the ideal choice to lead our legal affairs division.”

McKnight previously served the University in numerous legal roles, including vice president for Legal Affairs and general counsel from 2007 to 2016, where he provided strategic counsel to the president, board of trustees, and senior leadership. He was instrumental in overseeing compliance with federal and state regulations, managing risk and litigation, and shaping University policy.

Prior to rejoining FAMU, McKnight was a shareholder at Allen Norton & Blue, P.A., where he represented public and private employers in state and federal court and was recognized for his expertise as an advocate, trainer, and speaker on labor and employment law.

“I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to serve as vice president of Legal Affairs and general counsel at my alma mater,” says McKnight. “I look forward to working with the FAMU administration, board, faculty and staff to further the University’s strategic mission of educating students in the spirit of ‘Excellence with Caring.’”

A proud FAMU alumnus, McKnight earned his bachelor’s degree in data processing, magna cum laude, and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Florida State University College of Law. His professional accolades include being named to Florida Trend’s Legal Elite from 2008 to 2013 and receiving honors such as the NAACP Achiever Award and LIVE Communications’ African-American Honoree.

Throughout his career, McKnight has maintained a steadfast commitment to public service and leadership, having held positions on boards such as Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, Inc., and the University Center Club. He is also a member of Leadership Tallahassee and Leadership Florida. He is an ordained elder with the Church of God by Faith, Inc.
